i, too, am home for thanksgiving and would love to see people! preferably in groups, because I really don't have very much time here that's not required by the family - but I've missed you all! you may have noticed that i havne't updated in LJ in about, oh, 100 million years... this is a devious ploy to force you all to find out about my life by talking to me, not reading about it. That, or I've been ridiculously busy/lazy -- your pick ;) HAPPY THANKSGIVING, everyone! :-D | | Tuesday, November 2nd, 2004 | | 10:40 pm |
Halloween!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN TO EVERYONE! (yeah yeah, i'm a few days late...) Halloween pics here: http://www.ofoto.com/I.jsp?c=7ikb0ci.x6ozjrm&x=0&y=-b4zhee(Swansley came down from Columbia and met up with Char and I --> Franklin St. will never be the same again!) 70,000+ people, can you believe it? Also, birthday was incredible -- photos of that are slightly sketchy and will therefore remain semi-anonymous, but its exciting to be 19. Election coverage calls, but I miss you all! much love, kathryn | | Sunday, September 26th, 2004 | | 10:25 pm |
COMING HOME!!!
Gotta make this quick --> my FOCUS classes are travelling to Washington, DC this weekend as our trip (although I think we may be going to Europe for 2 weeks all-expenses-paid in May... we'll see about that...) SO I'll be in DC with a bunch of my awesome duke friends from mid-afternoon Friday (oct. 1st) to 5pm Saturday night... not sure how much free time I'll have, but I'd love to see a few of you if that's possible!!! Maybe dinner or something? I won't have a car so I may not even make it to noVA, but at the very least I'll be shacked up in some sketchy DC hotel? so come visit! (perhaps some DC clubbing may ensue Friday night?) Sorry I'm crap about updating... Duke is so amazing, I'm so fricken busy, but at least I've been mailing out a few letters! I hope everything is going alright back home, I <3 you all so so very much!! 'tchao~ | | Friday, September 17th, 2004 | | 3:18 pm |
so last night, I partied with Chris Duhon. apparently he was the duke bball star who graduated and now plays for the Chicago Bulls?... anyhow, he's a cool guy, bad at beirut though :) I've been here a month, its all really too much to explain over livejournal other than to say I love & miss you all! I really feel this is exactly where I'm supposed to be, exactly the right school for me, so though ups and downs... its a nice feeling I'm not sure if I'll be home for fall break (oct. 8th-12th or something) because believe it or not, i'm going to be in a durham fashion show hahaha... just a local designer, but they're hiring crazy psycho makeup artists and hair stylists and stuff, going all-out hardcore with the crazy fashion show stuff, theme of "outer space"! The show was moved from oct. 2nd to the 9th, so I had to choose between fall break and prancing around like a robot... easy choice, no? haha although right now I'm trying to work it so I can be home from the 10th -12th, so we'll see! question: when is homecoming? My writing 20 class bores the shit out of me, so all I've been doing in class is writing letters to people... if you'd like to get a letter (and you promise to write back) leave a comment and I'll mail you an exciting doodle-filled account of my life :-D & I wanna hear more about whats going on with all of you wonderful people back home! alright, I'm gonna go "study" on the quad / listen to my iPod (hehehe) / talk to everyone walking by... keep in touch! ;) | | Saturday, August 28th, 2004 | | 1:35 am |
wish me luck!
I could really use a ton of prayers & good luck wishes for tomorrow... 10:30am --> Callbacks for DUI (Duke University Improv, its this hugely popular improv group on campus, apparently 200-400 people auditioned and they called back *nine*, now they're narrowing it to three... We had the first round of callbacks Thursday evening, and the final round is tomorrow... eep!) (then lunch, nap, whatever) 1pm --> Callbacks for the Duke Players' "Hapgood"... this one I'd even MORE like to be a part of, but there's only 2 females in the show (the director is playing Mags as Maggie, making the 2nd one) and basically every female in the department is auditioning... but I'd still at least really like to do a respectable job, maybe get an understudy or just a production position, so.... yeah... I'm pretty stressed out about it I guess, but hopefully everything will work itself out :-D (in other news, my classes are tres interessant but SO HARD... I have 290 pages of reading - an International Relations TEXTBOOK no less - this weekend for just one class, plus another 70 pages of textbook-type reading in another, a writing response in a third, etc... fuuuuuun times) I LOVE AND MISS YOU ALL! PLEASE COME VISIT :-D -kathryn | | Monday, August 23rd, 2004 | | 12:50 pm |

COLLEGE
is awesome. Seriously, the past few days have been just... so amazing. Please write me as I miss all of you very, very much (and promise to write back!). So far we haven't had *any* downtime, but the pace is slowing down a little so i've got time to get my room in order and figure stuff out with my classes. Speaking of classes, I just had to buy $370 worth of textbooks!!! ????? This includes three used books and eight new (the class is new so there are no used books available), all required for my classes... crazy, huh? anyhow i've gotta run, but keep me posted!!! -kathryn ;) | | Monday, August 2nd, 2004 | | 2:52 pm |

Hokay, so, my last three days of work at On The Border are... Peak times = 5:30p-8:00p for dinner, 11:30a-1:15p for lunch college is either coming way too quickly, or not fast enough, and for the life of me I can't decide... | | Wednesday, June 2nd, 2004 | | 10:40 am |
And so I replied, "Well, have you ever kissed a camel?" -Graham
hmmm... a not-bad last few days. Got burned at the beach on Sunday, but it was more than worth it. Seriously, that might have been the most fun I've had in ages. Me, Swansley, Char, JenC, MeganM, and AnneJ woke up at 4:30am to leave for Rehoboth, set off the car alarm accidentally at 8:30a in front of a large hotel (oops!!! people got mad & came out on their balconies... soooo funny... sooo awful), fell asleep on the beach for a few hours, picnic lunch!, beach shopping, attempted get-in-the-water (too) cold, and more adventures. Really, really, just an amazing time Plans for this Summer: -Another Beach day trip -Roller skating! -Baltimore Aquarium, because I've never been -Eastern Market -National Zoo & other random DC things -etc We'll make it fun... goodtimes :) Drama picnic was better than expected; I'm happy with the results. It'll be nice, coming back to visit next year. Alright, I'm in geo & ms. schmid is starting to look at me suspiciously... be back later! -ciao! | | Sunday, May 16th, 2004 | | 1:21 am |
procrastinating writing my last crappy cappies review...
a most excellent Friday-- Lots of videotech work done in 2nd, followed by a relatively fun and uneventful geosystems -- and then my brilliant plans to see "TROY" with Claire & Emma were ruined by the fact that I had to be back by B-block, so instead I got chinese food with Emma (and now owe Charlene $2 of transitive debt taken over from Emma, to pay for my half of the chinese food... must remember this. also owe mariclaire $15 and caitlin owes me $5) why, you ask? BECAUSE WE WENT CLUBBING! But, I'm getting ahead of myself. Lunch w/ emma was supernice, raced back to school 10 minutes late for class but the sub wasn't even mad :-D Then a boring 6th and an exciting 8th period, followed by helping with the Viennese ball afterschool interspersed with catching some of "R&G are Dead", followed by an hour of actual Viennese-ball-ing (yay!!!), and then at 9:15-ish swansley caitlin and me left forrrrrr Platinum, in DC. We missed the "ladies get in free before 11pm" window (grrrrr) so everythign cost us an arm and a leg, but it was definitely worth it. Lots of sketchy guys but 'our' boys did a good job of protecting us :) Rules to remember for clubbing: 1) Do not wear a skirt 2) Bring guys to protect you, a 1:1 ratio if possible 3) Dress a little more conservatively than you would think, because here's the thing -- there are going to be girls there SO SLUTTY you can't believe anyone would leave the house like that. And lots of really sketchy guys, i mean REALLY sketchy. SO, theoretically, the sketchy guys go to the skanky girls and the nice, cute, normal guys go to the hot-dressed-but-not-slutty you. or that's the plan anyhow. but there are ALWAYS sketchy guys too. ah well... So it was a blast :) HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATIE! (again)... left at 1:30am, back in McLean at 2:15, then to "On the Run" for some food & last chatting, then home where blissful sleep awaited... today's been good too, though much less exciting. Must... go... write... cappies...review... see you all monday -- tchao! | | Sunday, May 9th, 2004 | | 2:15 pm |
"how does one say 'gov't whore' in russian? oh I remember, it's Comrade" (quote yoinked from marie)
well, a weird mix of days. Thursday = hell. A decent lit exam (oh how my poor hand hurts!) but then, just, a weird day... Hanging out with Joanna & trying on prom dresses (me? date? what?) was amazingly fun, but the before-and-after of the day were just messy. the night was nice, though, becauuuuuuuuuse... I GOT TO TALK ABOUT MODERN AMERICAN HISTORY! WHOO HOO yes, i am a big dork, but it was SO EXCITING! Maddie & I had a rockin AP US History 1900 - present day party and omg I love history... and teaching history... yeah it was really fun, sad but true! Friday = failing the AP euro (well, the mult. choice) - but at least I kicked the essays' asses. Then lots of fun girly time, dinner at Cuzco's w/ people I love, back to TJ in the pouring rain for Senior Night Lacrosse Game (canceled) so back out to have more fun w/ awesome people... to Megan's house to watch (best movie ever) BOONDOCK SAINTS. so that was awesome, we watched the "Mom Calls from Ireland" deleted scene at least, oh, three full times.... mmmmmmmm Saturday = my brother's lax game in the afternoon, TJ Senior Night Lax Game in the evening, and random stuff in-between. its really too bad that Girl's Lacrosse isn't as cool as guy's lax, or I might play it in college! :) Hung out a little after that with Jen, Anna, Mariclaire, etc, and some of the guys, but eventually (after Chris Ro borrowed my hilarious military jacket to wear hehehe) it was back to Herndon for the end of the Jazz/Swing Club :-D Only everyone had left... :( But a few of us hung out, ate food at my house, and then I drove Bill & his friend Andy home -- classily making it before midnight to avoid Bill's ears getting pulled off (or so said his parents). And today's been lovely so far as well. Church this morning was really, really nice -- our pastor always does the best mother's day messages... Good family lunch, and now I'm off to see "Gypsy" at Marshall HS with Mark G-M so in sumation: life's still a roller-coaster, but I guess it all works out eventually. we can't appreciate the good as much w/o all the bad. is that even true??? i wish it weren't, but... i don't know. oh, and when you ask someone "please don't mention this to So-and-So" they really shouldn't, unless there are extenuating circumstances. Which there *weren't*, in this case, so... yeah. but no harm done at least -- anyhow I'm off to frolic around Northern Virginia! ciao~ | | Sunday, May 2nd, 2004 | | 3:01 am |
"So this one time, at Computer Engineering and Problem Analysis Camp..."
well, long time no post! things have been quite nice, lately, despite the fact that I am going to fail my french AP Monday because I HAVEN'T EVEN STARTED STUDYING! (oops) yeeeeah but I've used my time well -- SWING/JAZZ CLUB TONIGHT WAS AMAZING! So you should all come next week, I highly recommend it! three evil cappies shows (mandatory) this weekend, but it's not that bad, as long as Sarah's there (or Max, or Anna H, or someone I know) its usually a blast. um... I had things to say here, but I can't remember anything now... its so late... i'm confused about a few things, but most of it is a Happy confusion :) my life is, again, a small soap-opera of Death and Good Things. combined. yeah... goodnight, all~ :) | | Wednesday, April 14th, 2004 | | 11:08 am |
good news I
AM
GOING
TO
DUKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so basically I've been jumping up and down since 9:30am, when I found out. :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D Thank you SO much, everyone, for your prayers! I don't know which other people that I met got it too, but I'll find out eventually. And if Char goes to UNC-Chapel Hill, we'll be rockin' up North Carolina!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yeah... I'm really happy today. (quick clarification: AB scholarship is tuition for 4 yrs, research $$, and summer study once at Oxford :0) yippee! 14 other students were offered the scholarship [out of 44 finalists]) hokay, so, back to geosystems... HAPPY APRIL EVERYONE (this mitigates the bad-ness of getting rejected from the ivies [yale, harvard, columbia, fyi]. and princeton waitlist, which was medium) ciao! Finally home from Duke -- SO MUCH LOVE!!! definitely one of the best weekends all year, hands down... I wish you guys could meet Jessica, Margo, Theo, Davis, Zach - some of the other kids I spent thurs-today hanging out with, 'cause you would all like them soooooo much! Duke = absolutely my current first choice. as for the scholarship, I could *really* use prayers for tomorrow/Tuesday. If I don't get this scholarship, chances are 97% no Duke for me. and the competition... wow. Kids who dewormed orphans in Somalia for the past three summers (no joke), raised $350,000 for refugees, one girl who's traveled all over the world doing humanitarian work (recently Russia and then Zimbabwe, where she's going to teach English in an isolated village for two months). Most of them were accepted to about four Ivies and numerous amazing non-Ivies, and... honestly I don't even know how they chose me as a finalist for this, on-paper I can't possibly compare to most of these people. However, my interview went really, incredibly well. Like, REALLY well, so... I guess I have a shot. yeah, we were supposed to discuss our accomplishments and favorite books & activities in this interview, right? I walk in and the interviewer says, "Just a quick question we're asking everyone: President Bush appoints you to his National Taks Force on Education in America. Give us your first report on the greatest problems in American education and how you would solve all of them." ! Anyhow I think I answered well (comprehensive tests & SOLs, my opinions on No Child Left Behind, who should fund what, etc) and they just kept asking more questions -- we discussed education for the ENTIRE HALF HOUR save about 5-6 minutes about History & International relations. I know things about history and international relations. I do NOT normally know things about education, except for mr. majeske's class (thank you, Lord!). Then I crammed EVERYTHING about Starworkz, TJ Drama, community theatre, all like 34 full plays and 40-bazillion starworkz things into the last 2-3ish minutes, rather unsuccessfully... but they do have my full application, so I guess that's mostly there. yeah. so, in conclusion, I WANT TO GO TO DUKE!!! Please, please, pray, wish me luck, whatever your style is, tomorrow afternoon (when they're deciding) or Tuesday-Wednesday (when I find out) because I want this SO badly and if it doesn't work out... SMU, probably... who knows... i don't even want to think about it yet, i'll deal with it later if i have to. see you all tomorrow! (sleep time, i slept only 4 hrs out of the last 48) 'night~ | | Friday, April 9th, 2004 | | 12:26 am |
I looooove Duke so far... I'll be here until Sunday, but my cell will be on so gimme a call if you need anything! I'll see you all Monday at school/tech week... much <3 to eveyone on a more serious note... I'm sorry I can't attend the funeral tomorrow; this weekend was pretty much unchangeable, but my thoughts and prayers will be with you all, and especially the Moser family... Rest in Peace, Mr. Moser. | | Wednesday, March 31st, 2004 | | 11:08 am |
so there's this class called geosystems...
Yeah... anyhow, yesterday was a really nice day, despite Monday's general suckiness. Reasons Monday blew: 1) it was a monday 2) I did all my odd day work and none of my even-day work 3) I was exhausted 4) Northwestern wants me to graduate from college $120,000 in debt 5) Eric/I broke up (mutual. and not that awful as far as breakups go, all things considering, it was definitely the right thing to do and I'm glad we didn't drag it out any longer. at the same time, breaking up just sucks no matter how you slice it. but i think i'm going to be much better off this way... if that made any sense at all) 6) Weird vibes from a close friend 7) it was a Monday So, yeah, not a highclass day. But, Tuesday was infinitely superior, with Faulkner classiness and Mr. McCarthy rocking out Euro and a much better time at build. Rewinding a little, this weekend was nice as well -- visited UVA Friday & Saturday, where I saw a whole bunch of gov school kids and TJ people I'd really, really missed :-D I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!! Good food and company in general, especially in Walmart. it's weird, seeing Jen, Dhruv, Will, (and Keegan, and that other guy I didn't know - also Matt, i think?) all hanging out together, but a good kind of weird. Gov school meets tj drama culture clash :) But whoa was that fun, esp. the... TOILET PLUNGER WARS Yeah, you know you want to... haha but it was great, and going to get sandwiches afterwards (IN COSTUME) with Matt, Dhruv, and Will... I was Jasmine (in kismet costume), Will & Matt were Mario and Luigi, and Dhruv was an "everyday hero" in his 7-11 shirt hehe... people kept asking us about the costumes and stuff, that was highclass. I left late, but ended up making it back in time for Eastern Market w/ my biblestudy girls, which rocked out :) Then home, nap, dinner, sleep - not a bad evening! College update: UVA - in, don't know about echols Duke - in, possible Full Ride SMU - in, full ride plus $10,000 (!) Northwestern - in, but I'd have to borrow $120,000 Emory - waitlisted (haha long story) columbia/yale/harvard/princton - ?? So basically, if i get rejected from all four tomorrow, i'll be sad but not crushed, 'cause I think I could be really happy at any of the first 3. But at the same time, I'd like to have one of those as an option, because I really loved all four schools. So, i'm just going to stop writing about it and shut up and wait for tomorrow. good plan. alright, back to geo -- love y'all, see you afterschool today :) | | Tuesday, March 23rd, 2004 | | 8:26 pm |
going away for the weekend was really, really nice - exactly what I needed to get a handle on insecurities (no, not the regular kind. no, i'd rather not explain). Coming home, however, was not. everything feels worse than I left it and its only been two days. In other news, the trip itself was really nice. SMU has a gorgeous campus, great weather (82 degrees when I arrived!!), really nice people, pretty good academics, really involved professors, wants to give me at least a little money, and... is in Dallas, Texas. as a city, I *love* Dallas. as a geographic location to go to college... not so much. I think I could be happy at SMU, but maybe I've become an East-coast girl, if that makes sense? not sure... college news: 2/9 officially, 4/9 unofficially, but all the tough ones are to come. nine colleges is really far too many to apply to! maybe visiting UVA this weekend, we'll see if that works out. Also hopefully going to the Eastern Market in DC w/ my teen CBS bible study group :) mrrrrh... it really hasn't been a good week so far, but at the very least I gradate relatively soon. and theoretically things get better as the days get warmer and sunnier "Arcadia" at RepStage was gorgeous, but more because the play is incredible than because of their production. the set was LOVELY w/ nice lighting & sound, but I thought some of the direction was lacking - esp. just character choices for interpretations of Thomasina, Bernard, Lady Croom etc. but yeah, I recommend it -- there's a few more performances next weekend, i might be going again :) alright, homework calls (senior slump where did you go??) -- 'night all Current Mood: your mom ;)Current Music: American Idol - "ain't going down til the sun comes up" | | Wednesday, March 17th, 2004 | | 8:37 pm |
it's really amazing how much easier it is to cope in Spring... or maybe it's just me? not sure Don't really feel like updating life-details here, except to say I'm going to be in Dallas for the next three days at SMU (where my parents went) and I'll miss you all! 'Arcadia' plans are still being coordinated for Saturday night, oui? I wonder how long it would take to get from Dulles to Columbia, MD, at like 6pm... hopefully, um, not longer than 2 hours! Build today was rockin' fun, I really like working with Teesa and Courtney! everyone else there generally wins at life, too. And now I should go pack... 'night, world~ |
